October 5
- Project: The Dreams
- Total word count: 23,902
- Today’s word count: 89
- Thoughts: I spent a lot of time playing video games today. The plan had been to alternate between writing and playing, but playing took over. Sometimes this method works for me, and sometimes it fails. Today was a failure in my book.
- Tomorrow’s goal: Find a better way to bribe/reward myself for writing.
October 6 – October 10
No writing progress made. I decided to try to tackle my lack of writing enthusiasm from a different angle. For several weeks I tried showing up to write every day, and more and more days I wrote very little or nothing at all. This week I still wanted to write, but I gave myself permission to do other things. I could open my writing program at any time. There was nothing stopping me from writing if I was ready to write, but I didn’t go into the day prepared to force myself to write. Yeah. I didn’t write for five of the last seven days, but I consider this little experiment to be a success.
Why?
On October 11 I wrote because I wanted to write. I wrote with enthusiasm for my project. It was great.
October 11
- Project: The Dreams
- Total word count: 24,100
- Today’s word count: 198
- Thoughts: I wrote because I wanted to write. I’m not falling out of love with my novel! I’ll write again with enthusiasm.
- Tomorrow’s goal: Keep the love going!
I want to make a post about this year’s NaNoWriMo, but I’m very much on the fence about what to write. This week might end up having a post about my indecision.
The video games always win if I try to alternate writing and playing. So instead I try to alternate writing and reading a chapter of a book — that works well most of the time.

Video games just consume my whole day nine times out of ten. If I could only manage to get all of my writing for the day done in the morning I could spend the evening playing video games, but it rarely works out that way for me.
