2015 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2015 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 1,600 times in 2015. If it were a cable car, it would take about 27 trips to carry that many people.

2016: The Year of Writing?

I certainly hope so!

2015 was a year full of changes.

I first started this blog in January, but did not start to really use it until August.

I started posting The Dreams this year. Now I’ve reached the point of posting a chapter every week. I can still hardly believe it!

I started the year with a job and dreams of more time to write. Here at the end of the year I’ve been laid off and I dream of paying my bills by writing (maybe not soon, but some day).

Most of the year I could not get myself to write with any consistency. Then I started using this blog to make myself more accountable to my writing. Now I seem to be doing a pretty good job of writing every day.

I lost both Camp NaNoWriMo sessions this year, but I managed to win NaNoWriMo with a huge word count rally in the final days. Now I know I can do it, but hope I won’t have to do it again.

In terms of writing 2015 has only gotten better as the year progressed. Unfortunately the future has only become more uncertain.

All of the uncertainty in my life these days reminds me to be sure only to give myself goals for 2016 that I can actually control. There are plenty of things I would love to see happen next year, but I won’t be able to make them happen on my own so I won’t include those.

My 2016 Goals

  1. Write every day
  2. Post a chapter every week
  3. Finish The Dreams
  4. Start writing another novel
  5. Win CampNaNoWriMo at least once
  6. Win NaNoWriMo

Six goals seems like a completely doable number for the year. Have I missed any obvious ones? What are your goals for the new year?

Liebster Award!

A huge thank you to Brigid at Brigid Writes Things for nominating me for a Liebster Award! The Liebster is an award for bloggers awarded by other bloggers to promote blogs with less than 1,000 followers.

The Rules:

  1. Thank the person who nominated you and link to their blog.
  2. Answer the 11 questions your nominator gave you.
  3. Tag 11 bloggers with less than 1,000 readers.
  4. Think of 11 questions for the bloggers you have nominated.
  5. Let them know you have nominated them through social media or their blog.

Brigid’s Questions:

1. Put your music on shuffle. What are the first five songs that come up?

  • Emerald Sword by Rhapsody
  • Auger of Thrall by Amber Asylum
  • Seduces Me by Celine Dion
  • Desdemonamelia by Bloodbound
  • Carried by the Wind by Ayreon

2. What’s the last thing that made you laugh really hard?

My cousin tried to throw a balloon off my aunt’s deck and the wind blew it right back up and it hit him in the face.

3. What’s something you did in 2015 that you’re proud of?

I finally got past my fear and started posting my writing online. I’ve been writing for years and for most of that time I’ve been too afraid of negative feedback to even consider sharing with the public. Now that I’ve done it I know I was afraid of nothing.

4.What’s one thing you hope to accomplish in 2016?

The biggest goal I have for 2016 is finishing The Dreams. It will take a lot of hard work, but I think I can do it.

5. Do you enjoy going to concerts? If so, what was the last one you went to?

Concerts are a lot of fun! I only go once or twice a year. The last concert I went to was Kamelot, but it was cancelled last minute due to the Baltimore riots. Unfortunately, we were already in Baltimore and waiting in line when the cancellation happened. Bummer.

The last concert I went to before that was Within Temptation. They’re amazing!

6. What is one of your favorite quotes?

“We tend to think things are new because we just discovered them.” Madeleine L’Engle, A Wind in the Door

7. What is the weirdest food you like?

Home-made sauer kraut! This year my extended family got together and turned over 200 pounds of cabbage into sauer kraut. It was insane, and so much fun.

8. What book has made you cry the hardest?

Dear America: Voyage on the Great Titanic

I read this book years ago as a kid and it still makes me tear up.

9. What was the best day of your life?

The best day of my life was probably the day my boyfriend moved here from across the country. Long distance relationships are hard.

10. What fictional world would you love to live in (or at least spend some time in)?

Middle Earth. I would love to have a chance to visit Rivendell and maybe The Shire, but the rest of that world seems a little too dangerous for my tastes.

11. If you could meet any author (living or dead), who would it be?

Tolkien! I would love to have the opportunity to ask him about his world building process.

My Nominees:

Pat at Pat Plays Some Romhacks

R. R. Willica

Amanda at amanda.actually

Princess of Dragons

L. M. Murphy at See Murphy Write

Paige at Turtle Writer

WDLady at The Nightmare Never Ends

Jay at Thoughts of a Paper Dragon

Allegra at My Library Card Wore Out

Helen at Crispy Confessions

Izzy at http://ijtet822.tumblr.com/

My Questions:

  1. What music gets you in the mood for writing?
  2. In your opinion what is the best thing you’ve written so far?
  3. Have you accomplished your goals for 2015?
  4. What is one thing you want to see happen in 2016?
  5. What is your favorite book you read this year?
  6. Coffee or tea?
  7. Have you visited anywhere exciting in the past year? Where?
  8. What is your favorite thing about blogging/writing?
  9. What would you do if you won a million dollars?
  10. What book would you like to see made into a movie?
  11. What is your current favorite tv show?

This has been a lot of fun! Thanks again to Brigid for nominating me. I hope my nominees have a much fun as I did with this.

Writing Progress December 21 – 27, 2015

December 21

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 82,399
  • Today’s word count: 253
  • Thoughts: Better than yesterday, but still not great. I’ll try again tomorrow.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Tomorrow I start editing the next chapter. I can only hope that it will go as well as thing did last week.

December 22

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 82,440
  • Today’s word count: 41
  • Thoughts: Not too upset about my low word count today. I spent my time editing so over all I did spend a lot of time working on my writing. I just delete words and add other words so only a small increase in apparent.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More editing! If I’m really lucky I might be able to get the chapter done tomorrow. I really want it done before Friday because I don’t think I will be in the editing mood on Christmas.

December 23

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 82,437
  • Today’s word count: -3
  • Thoughts: I never thought I would be posting a negative word count for my daily progress, but that’s what revising does to me. The scene I was working on needed a lot of tweaking so I did it. That resulted in fewer words than I had at the start.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: I need to finish editing the next chapter. I’m past the halfway point so it won’t be too much longer.

December 24

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 82,340
  • Today’s word count: -97
  • Thoughts: Even more editing! I didn’t even finish editing the chapter. There’s a lot of passive voice that needs cleaned up. I hope I’m catching it all.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Christmas with the family. I probably won’t write.

December 25

Christmas. No writing progress made.

December 26

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 82,336
  • Today’s word count: -4
  • Thoughts: I finally finished editing the chapter and posted it. Couldn’t find the motivation to write more after the editing ordeal.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Write, maybe. I have another Christmas party with my extended family and don’t know if I will have the time or energy to write.

December 27

Christmas party. No writing progress made.

I’m hoping next week will be a bit less chaotic. We are having a couple people over for New Year’s Eve so there’s a chance I might miss a day of writing because of that. Other than that it should be a fairly typical week with plenty of opportunities to get a good word count. Let’s hope I actually write when I have the time.

The Dreams: Chapter Seven

I made it. It’s still Saturday (for me, at least) so I’m not late.

Unlike the last chapter, this one was just awful for me to edit. It’s just my luck that I run into a tough chapter during a holiday week. The chapter is done though, at least to my eyes. As always if you see an error be sure to let me know!

My supporters are a continuing source of inspiration. I write because it’s what I love, but you guys keep me on a schedule. If you like The Dreams and would like to support it please visit my Patreon for more information.

Writing Progress December 14 – 20, 2015

December 14

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 80,122
  • Today’s word count: 581
  • Thoughts: The first couple hundred words seem to be the hardest for me to write these days. Unfortunately, once I got past those words today it was already very late.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Try to get my writing time in earlier in the day so I can write more once I get past the awkward couple hundred words at the start.

December 15

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 80,435
  • Today’s word count: 313
  • Thoughts: I did it. I finished revisions on the next chapter in one day. I’ve never done that before. It’s awesome. I posted a snipped of Chapter Six for my Patrons. The whole chapter will be posted here on Saturday.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: I’m not really sure what I want to accomplish tomorrow with my revisions for the week already done. I suppose I try to write.

December 16

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count:  81,011
  • Today’s word count: 604
  • Thoughts: Not a bad day writing-wise. It was a bit of a struggle to get started though.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Get some more writing done before the weekend hits and there are more potential distractions.

December 17

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 81,400
  • Today’s word count: 389
  • Thoughts: Not as productive of a day as I would have liked. I’m just going to blame the rain for making me tired.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Start the weekend off right with a hugely productive writing day.

December 18

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 81,768
  • Today’s word count: 368
  • Thoughts: Not as productive of a day as I had hoped. A headache struck in the middle of my writing session and threw me off for the rest of the day.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Avoid headaches. Write at least 500 words, and post Chapter Six.

December 19

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 82,072
  • Today’s word count: 304
  • Thoughts: I got Chapter Six posted, but my word count is still on a downward slide. I’m not impressed.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Try to write more than yesterday rather than less.

December 20

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 82,146
  • Today’s word count: 74
  • Thoughts: I don’t know what happened, but my word count is puny today.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Get my word counts back on track! I’m not going to get anywhere if I take forever to write a scene. My best writing comes from more productive writing sessions anyway.

My holidays aren’t going to be very hectic, so hopefully I will be able to keep writing every day for the next two weeks. I’m making no promises though. Even without a ton of traveling I could still end up needing a day to recharge in there somewhere.

Happy holidays, everyone!

Another Saturday and another chapter! I’m so thrilled that I’m able to keep up this weekly posting schedule.

This chapter was a pleasure to edit. I managed to get through the whole thing in one day. I hope that doesn’t mean I missed to many errors. If I did I’m sure someone will let me know.

The continued support and encouragement of my supporters has been just the boost I’ve needed to keep my spirits up and my motivation high. You guys are amazing! Writing Progress December 7 – 13, 2015

December 7

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 76,791
  • Today’s word count: 51
  • Thoughts: Didn’t write as much as I’d hoped. Read a lot of fanfiction instead. Oops!
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Write more. Read less fanfiction.

December 8

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 77,833
  • Today’s word count: 1,042
  • Thoughts: Back on track! It took a lot of smaller writing sessions to add up to my 1,000 words for today, but I got there and that’s all that matters.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Writing and revising combo. Hopefully write another 1k, but also get to work on Chapter Five so it will be ready to be posted later this week.

December 9

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 78,081
  • Today’s word count: 248
  • Thoughts: Lot’s of editing done today! I’ve only got a bit more work to do before Chapter Five will be finished and ready to post. Exciting! I think the next chapter will probably be posted on Saturday.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Finish editing and get back to writing again.

December 10

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 78,243
  • Today’s word count: 162
  • Thoughts: I finished editing Chapter Five!
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Get back to writing new stuff. Not putting too much pressure on myself since it will be my birthday.

December 11

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 78,443
  • Today’s word count: 200
  • Thoughts: Writing on my birthday might not have been the best idea. I learned that birthdays are much, much better for planning. I added a ton of scenes to the outline. If you haven’t guessed already The Dreams is going to be a very long story.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Post the next chapter and get on with the writing.

December 12

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 78,983
  • Today’s word count: 540
  • Thoughts: I’m doing a bit better writing-wise, but the scene I’m working on is giving me trouble. I think I have it figured out though so hopefully tomorrow will go even better.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Finish the troublesome scene and write more than I did today.

December 13

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 79,541
  • Today’s word count: 558
  • Thoughts: I just barely wrote more than yesterday. I learned an important lesson. If things are going well I shouldn’t stop writing. There is always a chance I will fail to have the breakthrough I expected the next day.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing, of course. I’m really hoping to reach 80k. That will be fun.

The Dreams is going to be posting on a weekly, or near weekly basis for at least the next couple months. I’m just so excited to have enough of a writing buffer to be able to look ahead like this. I just hope I have the stamina to keep it up and see this story through to the end.

I’m not 100% sure what I will do during the upcoming holidays writing-wise and in regards to posting chapters. I’d like to still post a chapter each of those weeks, but I’m a bit worried that people will be too busy to read. I guess those chapters will still be there in January and I’m worrying about nothing.

The Dreams: Chapter Five

Here’s another chapter! I almost can’t believe I’m posting two chapters in two weeks. It’s a great feeling.

I’ve been getting a lot of positive feedback for The Dreams lately. Knowing that my writing is being enjoyed by others is a huge source of motivation. I have plenty of chapters waiting to be editing so I plan on posting a chapter a week for at least quite a while.

I write for me, but having the support of others makes a huge difference. I would like to thank my supporters for helping me reach for even bigger and brighter goals for my writing. If you enjoy my writing and want to help me afford nice things like cover art please check out my Patreon. It doesn’t take much to make a big difference.
