I can’t believe I haven’t made a post about my writing soundtrack before. I talk about it all the time. I add new songs to it all the time.
Almost every time I sit down to write I turn on my novel’s playlist. For each project the playlist starts around the same time I start outlining. It keeps growing until I stop working on the project.
The songs don’t all serve the same purpose. Some are there because they get me pumped and make me want to write. Others are there because the music fits the atmosphere of the novel in some way. A few songs are there because the lyrics almost seem to be written specifically for one of my characters.
I have this playlist on my computer and play it on shuffle whenever I’m trying to write. It does a great job of helping me focus and keeping myself in the right mindset for the story I’m writing.
Recently I decided to make the playlist for The Dreams into a Youtube playlist, and since I’ve managed to find and add almost all of the songs I thought it would be fun to share it here.
The Dreams Writing Soundtrack!
Do you create playlists for your novel? Is it just part of the planning process or is it something you listen to while writing? I’d love to hear about songs or artists you find particularly inspiring!
Sometimes I listen to songs that inspire the scene I’m writing and jot them down. All those songs form a soundtrack, but usually I don’t compile them into a YT or iTunes playlist. This NaNo I actually threw a few songs into a separate playlist during prep month, but didn’t even listen to it during November. Guess you never know what your story is going to sound like until you write it…

I love making playlists! I don’t listen to them while I’m writing (too easily distracted), but they are good for listening to in the car and brainstorming ideas.

I’ve been thinking about this post for a while, actually, and I think I’m going to start posting some of the songs I associate with certain characters and stories on my blog. Thanks! 😀
