Man, I have missed you guys! Spawn flattened me with a stomach bug #kidsarecutebutevil. But, I am back so let’s get to work. All of us have days where we wonder if what we do even matters. Why did we have to become writers? Especially in these times?

Why couldn’t we have gotten into this gig when wealthy patrons financed our work? And we could seal our manuscript with a fancy wax seal like the kind we bought for ourselves at Barnes & Noble but are too shy to use on our water bill?

I know y’all bought one too, and for those who didn’t, is that a quill and ink set from the Renaissance festival I detect? Do I smell parchment? O_o

Ah the good old days…

I am an “Old Dog” of the digital publishing paradigm. I’ve been…

Writing Progress September 19 – 25, 2016

September 19

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 180,014
  • Today’s word count: 1,304
  • Thoughts: Yay! 180,000 words! I can’t believe this story is so long!
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. Try to get to bed on time.

September 20

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 181,025
  • Today’s word count: 1,011
  • Thoughts: Today I didn’t let myself get hung up on my lack of writing during the day. I’ve been writing best at night so I let myself wait until nighttime and didn’t feel guilty about tackling other things during the day.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More of the writing stuff. Maybe a bit of the revision stuff too.

September 21

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 181,369
  • Today’s word count: 344
  • Thoughts: Migraines are the worst thing in the world. I don’t know how I managed to write at all. I’ve been pretty miserable all day.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Revisions. More writing. No more migraine, please.

September 22

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 180,718
  • Today’s word count: -651
  • Thoughts: I spent all day revising one scene. I cut all those words from one scene. I can’t tell if I did a lot of work or not. My perception is skewed by measuring my revision success in terms of scenes completed.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Finish revising this week’s chapter. Get the teaser posted for my patrons.

September 23

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 180,327
  • Today’s word count: -391
  • Thoughts: I’m still not finished revising this chapter. Part of the problem is that I overwrote the entire thing so I’m cutting a lot of words. The other part of the problem is the migraine that just won’t go away.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Continue revising in hopes of getting the chapter posted before the day is out.

September 24

Usually on days I don’t move my word count up or down I just say “no writing progress made” but I did make progress today. I’m still revising. This chapter needed a lot of TLC, I wasn’t feeling well recently, and I stressed myself out way too much trying to get the chapter out on time. It’s late now. I’m still stressed, but now I’m more determined than anything. There still more revising to do and I’m going to do it.

September 25

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 179,902
  • Today’s word count: -425
  • Thoughts: I feel like I spent forever revising this chapter, but it is finally posted. I haven’t felt this relieved to get a chapter out in a long time. I ended up cutting 1,467 words from the chapter. I had to comb over the whole thing multiple times to make sure I didn’t ruin it by working on it while not at my best. I hope I made it into something resembling a coherent chapter.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Back to writing!

Now for something not related to writing that still makes me happy. Saturday night I found an adorable calico fantail goldfish. I couldn’t resist bringing him/her home.img_20160925_192541img_20160925_191705

This little guy doesn’t have a name yet. I’m thinking I want to go with a literary reference, but I haven’t settled on anything. Do you have any ideas for a name?

This chapter is so, so late! Somehow it feels appropriate that it’s a longer chapter. I was knocked out by a migraine for several days this week and had the bright idea of trying to work on this week’s chapter while under the weather so I had to go back to fix everything I messed up when I should’ve been resting. I hope I straightened everything back out.

Thank you for being so patient with me! The next chapter should be back on the regular schedule.

40 Days Until NaNoWriMo

I love these new banners and icons!

For now my preparation is still limited to training myself to write lots and lots of words on a daily basis. That’s been going pretty well so far. I’m writing more than 1,000 words most days. I just need to keep up my momentum and try to produce even more words on a daily basis before NaNoWriMo starts.

Things are starting to change. Today is the first day of autumn. Every day from here on out it will feel more and more like NaNoWriMo season.

Soon I’ll really need to buckle down on creating an outline for this year’s novel, but for now I’m still comfortable telling myself I’ll take care of that in October. There’s still more than a week left in September so I can trick myself into thinking I have plenty of time before I need to get started.

I’m trying not to think about it too much. Looking at the future too much distracts me from getting my work done in the present.

How are your preparations for NaNoWriMo going? Do you have an idea? Do you have an outline ready to go? Let me know in the comments!

Writing Progress September 12 – 18, 2016

September 12

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 172,000
  • Today’s word count: 1,020
  • Thoughts: I did most of today’s writing late at night. I don’t know why it is easier for me to write then, but I wish I could reach my goal earlier in the day just so I wouldn’t have to worry about not making it all day.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. Maybe I’ll reach my goal earlier in the day since I stressed myself out some much thinking I wouldn’t make it.

September 13

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 173,008
  • Today’s word count: 1,008
  • Thoughts: Today was a really exciting day! I’m back on track to start another streak of 1,000+ word days and Patreon just started a partnership with Discord so I spent some time setting that up. Now any of my Patrons that link their Discord account to Patreon will be invited to join my server and chat with me. Pretty cool, right?
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Another 1,000 word day, please? I’ve been maxing out at 3 day streak and I’d love to hit 4+ this time!

September 14

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 174,116
  • Today’s word count: 1,108
  • Thoughts: I had another day where the majority of my writing happened very late at night. I stayed up way past my usual bedtime writing. Word happened so I’m not going to complain too much. Just don’t get between me and my coffee in the morning.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Revision day! I need to revise this week’s chapter and after that I hope to write even more.

September 15

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 175,134
  • Today’s word count: 1,018
  • Thoughts: I revised and then I still managed to have a net gain of over 1,000 words. I’m really pleased with the amount of progress I’m making day by day, but it is also making me think about how much I will need to structurally alter The Dreams when I go back to rewrite it. For now I’m just telling the story as best I can, but I can already see room for improvement. Does this happen to anyone else?
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. I need to keep my streak going!

September 16

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 176,626
  • Today’s word count: 1,492
  • Thoughts: I started out struggling to produce words today. I woke up with a revising mindset and it took me hours to get out of it. Then it clicked and I wrote more words than I intended. It ended up being a great day.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Post this week’s chapter and then lots and lots of writing. I’m feeling motivated and I want to see if I can’t beat today’s word count.

September 17

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 177,652
  • Today’s word count: 1,026
  • Thoughts: I’m really excited that I’ve met my daily word count goal six days in a row. It’s a good sign! My only regret is that I seem to be falling into a habit of doing all my writing very late at night. There’s nothing wrong with writing late at night, but it does stress me out a bit not to have my day’s number one priority completed until after midnight.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. This time I’ll try to finish a bit earlier.

September 18

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 178,710
  • Today’s word count: 1,058
  • Thoughts: I didn’t get into writing until late in the day again. I tried to get started earlier and felt a lot of mental resistance. On a small positive note, I did finish my writing for the day a half hour earlier than yesterday.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Keep writing and working on getting my writing done a bit earlier. I’d like my old bedtime back.

45 Days Until NaNoWriMo

We’re getting close to the time of year when everyone starts to get as excited as me about NaNoWriMo. I love this time of year!

Today I’m thinking about my planning supplies. I’m a huge fan of Scrivener, but I still do some of my planning by hand. Some ideas just come easier when written by hand.

That’s why I usually have a designated journal for a serious project. Once I have one selected I’ll sift through my ideas journal and pull out all of the tidbits I’ve written down that I want to use in this year’s NaNo.

This is my current project’s journal.

My available options for NaNoWriMo’s idea journal. Photo is a little dark because my cats were trying to help a little bit too much and this was the only one that came out tail and paw free.

It’s hard to pick a journal! I have options available, but I’m still wondering if I should see what else is out there. There’s something really special about a journal with a purpose. I’m not looking for a perfect match. I think that the journal will grow to match the story, or maybe the story grows to match the journal.

Maybe I just put too much importance on the looks of the journal, but it’s nice to have something special.

Are you gathering up planning and plotting supplies for NaNoWriMo? Are you so far ahead of me that you have journals and notebooks filled to the brim already? Let me know in the comments!

The Dreams: Chapter Forty Two

I’m not sure how I feel about this chapter. I have a feeling it will be obvious that this is part of the story that I did not have a clear, planned out vision of when I started writing it. These scenes were planned, but never really planned. With time and another round of rewrites I think I can make it much better. For now this is what I have.

If you’re interested in reading The Dreams as a .pdf, .epub, or .mobi please check out chapters 1 – 39 here.

With this chapter like every other chapter I owe a huge thank you to my fantastic supporters. If you enjoy my writing please consider becoming my Patron. This week I added a Discord server as a brand new perk. Now we can get together and chat whenever.

Writing Progress September 5 – 11, 2016

September 5

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 168,023
  • Today’s word count: 1,010
  • Thoughts: I just barely met my minimum word count goal. I struggled to stay focused today and my final word count is the result of many brief writing sessions instead of two or three lengthier ones.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing, hopefully with less distractions.

September 6

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 168,326
  • Today’s word count: 303
  • Thoughts: I’m really disappointed with the lack of progress today. I had a gig that required me to be out of the house for a few hours early in the day and I never got back into my usual routine after I returned. It’s something I need to work on for the future because there will always be some days I have to go outside.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Back to writing for real.

September 7

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 169,333
  • Today’s word count: 1,007
  • Thoughts: I can’t explain why, but getting to 1,000 words was very difficult today. I don’t know if it’s because I didn’t reach my target yesterday or if something else was blocking me, but I don’t like it.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Revisions. So many revisions. Then more writing.

September 8

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 169,323
  • Today’s word count: -10
  • Thoughts: I spent the entire day revising. Other weeks this would have taken me half the day at most, but today I just did not have the strength to push through it. I’m going to blame the heat. Summer decided to come back full blast the last few days and it’s sapped my energy.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Back to writing!

September 9

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 170,050
  • Today’s word count: 727
  • Thoughts: My biggest struggle today was getting started. That didn’t happen until late and because of that, my word count was a bit lower than I would like.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Post a new chapter and write more.

September 10

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 170,524
  • Today’s word count: 474
  • Thoughts: I didn’t write as much as I would have liked, but once again I had my desire to be productive smashed by oppressive heat. At this point, fall can’t start soon enough. I’m tired of making myself half-sick if I exert any sort of effort.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Well, it’s supposed to be cooler so let’s see if I can make up for my underperforming word counts this week.

September 11

  • Project: Commission project
  • Total word count: 466
  • Today’s word count: 466
  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 170,980
  • Today’s word count: 456
  • Thoughts: Busy, busy day. I wish I would have written more, but it just did not work out that way.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing!
