Inbetween: Chapter Five

Back on track! I’m so glad I didn’t let getting off track for one chapter snowball into all my chapters being late.

I owe a huge thank you to my fantastic supporters for being here and believing in me. I wouldn’t be doing this if it wasn’t for you. Check out my Patreon if you want to support my writing and help my creations go from first draft to maybe someday a real book you can hold in your hands.

Inbetween: Chapter Four

inbetween-draft-cover

It’s here! It’s late, but it’s here. I was so upset when I could not post this chapter on Saturday. This is the first chapter of 2017 and I wanted everything to go smoothly. Of course, nothing goes as planned. Chapter Five should be ready to go on Saturday so we won’t be off schedule for too long.

I owe a huge thank you to my fantastic supporters for being here and believing in me. Thank you for all the love and support in 2016. I wouldn’t be doing this if it wasn’t for you. Let’s work together to make 2017 even better! Writing Progress January 2 – 8, 2017

DailyWritingProgress

January 2

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 22,303
  • Today’s word count: 41
  • Thoughts: I wrote. That’s something. I’m not terribly thrilled with the low word count, but I did have a lot of computer maintenance work to take care of.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. I need to get back into the groove of writing a reasonable number of words every day.

January 3

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 22,720
  • Today’s word count: 417
  • Thoughts: We’re getting back on track! I can build up from this and make some serious daily progress. Let’s make it happen!
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. Let’s see if I can top 500 words.

January 4

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 23,388
  • Today’s word count: 668
  • Thoughts: Better! I’m pretty pleased with this word count: I’d still like to do better. It’s something I’ll keep working at. I’d like to get to the point where 4 digit word counts are a regular occurrence.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Revision! I have another chapter to post this week after all. Hopefully I can wrap it up quickly and write more too.

January 5

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 23,510
  • Today’s word count: 122
  • Thoughts: I added more words than I thought I would considering I was revising.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Finish revising the final scene for this week’s chapter and get back to writing new words.

January 6

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 23,572
  • Today’s word count: 62
  • Thoughts: This just was not my day. The Internet stopped working and still isn’t working. It looks like it won’t be fixed until Monday. For now I’m trying to focus on reading and writing and trying not to think about the fact that I won’t be able to post a chapter this weekend.

January 7

No writing progress made. I don’t know what happened to be honest. I just shut down and played games and watched TV. To be honest, something about not being able to back up my work to the cloud makes me nervous.

January 8

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 23,583
  • Today’s word count: 11
  • Thoughts: My internet came back tonight! I was excited, overwhelmed and had a lot of catching up to do. I think it showed in my word count.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Get caught up! Get the chapter posted! Write so many things!

Psychology of the Hater—Using our Naysayers to Fuel Greatness

Love it! Stay positive!

We have better things to do with our time than hate on others. All writers are in the same boat. We’re all trying to do the same thing and tearing each other down for doing it a different way helps no one at all.

Sometimes I do feel insecure. I feel like I’m a failure compared to other writers with more readers or more books out there, but it’s better to figure what they’re doing right than to hate them for doing it.

All right, I spent last post addressing HuffPo’s latest snooty rant regarding self-publishing and that’s cool. I don’t like giving attention to haters and click-bait. But, I also know there are a lot of emerging writers who follow this blog, who are finding their way in this crazy world of publishing. I’m here to keep you ON FIRE and to tell you not to let ANYONE steal your sparkle.

So today I want to milk a bit more out of this horrible post, because I think we can all learn something that is going to make us all better. And baby we need to be better. This is a tough world and we gotta STICK AND MOVE! No time to stand still!

Love Your Haters

If everybody loves us we are doing something wrong. We are blasé. We are the mediocre middle and nobody cares or even notices the mediocre…

These are great! I think #8 is my favorite. Let’s all try to be happy writers in 2017!

I started 2016 with a miserable writer look on my face (similar to a bulldog chewing a wasp) and I ended it with a smile. As the year progressed my writer happiness levels increased.

Based on my learnings from 2016, here are my top tips on how to be a happy writer in 2017:

Writing Progress December 26, 2016 – January 1, 2017

DailyWritingProgress

December 26

No writing progress made. I had a family Christmas party and came home with no energy to put into my writing.

December 27

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 21,820
  • Today’s word count: 40
  • Thoughts: Well, it’s better than nothing, and I am way out of practice. I haven’t been writing much lately. The holidays just throw me completely off track. I’m the sort of person that needs long stretches of time to wind up before I get into my work and make real progress. Having lots of little interruptions throughout the day throws me off track and I can’t get the same sort of flow I would on days I’m completely on my own.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. I want to get back into my writing groove so I can have a fantastic start to 2017 next week.

December 28

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 22,299
  • Today’s word count: 479
  • Thoughts: Progress! I can’t remember the last time I made this sort of progress in one day. I’m thrilled. I can’t wait to be more productive tomorrow.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Revision time and more writing, I hope.

December 29

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 22,265
  • Today’s word count: -34
  • Thoughts: I added some words. I took some other words away. Overall it was a fairly typical day of revisions. I’m noticing that revising words written during NaNoWriMo is significantly more difficult than words writing at other times of the year. I think my writing voice is weird when I’m frantically writing a new project. The next few chapters are going to have the same problem. Hopefully getting past the NaNoWriMo part of the novel will clear it up.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Finish up this week’s revisions and get back to writing. I’d like to get a decent number of words in before the year is over, but that might be asking too much of myself.

December 30

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 22,262
  • Today’s word count: -3
  • Thoughts: Maybe I should start planning for two days of revising every week. It would be the realistic thing to do considering the pattern I’ve been seeing lately. A part of me wants to keep shooting to complete it all in one day. I was able to do it before so I should be able to do it again. I think the NaNoWriMo chapters are just a bit messier than I can handle in one day.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Post the final chapter of the year, write at least a bit and celebrate the start of a new year.

December 31

I got the chapter posted, but I didn’t find the time or energy to do any writing. I hosted a small get-together for New Year’s Eve and just did not have the time or energy to create new words. I had a good time so I think it was worth it. The holiday interruptions should be over soon so I can turn my focus completely back to writing and hopefully stop feeling so lost.

January 1

I spent the day with my family so I didn’t have much of an opportunity to write during the day. Once I got home I was too tired to write. I didn’t sleep until quite late because my sleep schedule seems to have died over the holidays, but I did not have the mental energy left to create new words.

My latest theory regarding my inability to write after social events is simply that I’m very introverted. Spending time with people, even people I love, leaves me so drained that I need to turn inward to recharge. During that recharge period I just can’t find the energy or the motivation to be creative.

Now that the holiday season is winding down, my life should be quiet again. I’ll have plenty of energy to expend on writing again very soon!

What I Read in December

2016 is over. I didn’t complete my GoodReads challenge for the year. I just could not keep up the pace I set in previous years. I’m not thrilled to have read less books, but since I do most of my reading before I fall asleep, I guess this means I had less insomnia this year. That can’t be a bad thing.

I haven’t decided how many books I want to try reading in 2017. I hope I can read more than I did in 2016, though.

Books I finished reading in December:

Did you read any great books in December? I’d love some recommendations for books to read in 2017!

Did you read enough books to complete the GoodReads challenge? Have you decided on a goal for 2017? Let me know in the comments!
