Writing Progress October 23 – 29, 2017

October 23

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 125,673
  • Today’s word count: 406
  • Thoughts: Today was weird. I had bursts of inspiration, but they never lasted more than a couple hundred words. The words I kept seem like they will be solid enough with a bit of polish, but the brain fog I had today resulted in a lot of silly nonsense that did not fit the story very well.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. More prep. Less brain fog.

October 24

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 126,132
  • Today’s word count: 459
  • Thoughts: I feel like I’m getting my mojo back, but I still can’t fully escape this brain fog. I think I just need to get more consistent good nights of sleep behind me before it fades away completely.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. More NaNo prep. Revisions. I just want to get revisions done and over with this week so I can get back to writing and prep. Priorities!

October 25

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 126,684
  • Today’s word count: 552
  • Thoughts: Revisions and writing happened today, but I’ve been slacking on NaNo prep and that cannot be happening this close to November!
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Finish revisions, write more words, and actually tackle NaNo prep. I can’t avoid it at this point in the month.

October 26

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 126,750
  • Today’s word count: 66
  • Thoughts: Ugh. Revisions. I always think I might get away with an easy week, but I’m always wrong. The struggle is real. The only choice I have is to keep on struggling until I succeed.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Wrap up revisions. NaNo prep. NaNo prep. NaNo prep!

October 27

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 126,782
  • Today’s word count: 32
  • Thoughts: Revisions are done! I made progress with NaNo prep! I wrote about two sentences of Inbetween! Today was a day for progress!
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Post chapter, NaNo prep, more writing… just a typical Saturday at the end of October.

October 28

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 127,142
  • Today’s word count: 360
  • Thoughts: I made some progress with Inbetween, but a bit less with my NaNo prep. Progress is progress though so I won’t complain.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More prep. More writing. More excited dancing at the though of the start of NaNoWriMo.

October 29

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 127,262
  • Today’s word count: 120
  • Thoughts: I could have written more today, but I ended up worrying about the wind knocking out our power and I decided to shut down the computer and read in bed instead of playing data loss roulette.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing and intense NaNo prep. Holy crap. It is almost November and I have so much left to do!

Draft 3 of The Dreams will be on Patreon Soon

NaNo-2017-Participant-Facebook-Cover

I haven’t made a post specifically to announce my project for NaNoWriMo this year, and with November just around the corner, I know it is now or never.

This year I’ll be rewriting The Dreams for NaNoWriMo. It’s not a traditional start-from-nothing first draft NaNo project, but I am starting this draft with a 0 word count so I feel like it still fits into that aspect of the spirit of the month.

There are aspects of The Dreams I’ve wanted to change for a long time and rereading the story has helped me discover more things I want to change. This draft is my chance to change those things. I hope that the changes will improve the story and bring me one step closer to a version of The Dreams suitable for publication as a book.

I’ve decided to post this new draft on Patreon for several reasons. First of all, I don’t want to bore or confuse readers here by having multiple versions of the same story available. On Patreon people are already dedicated to following my progress as a writer and will be less likely to be confused or annoyed by the reappearance of a familiar tale. Second of all, I want to reward those who have given me the most support by giving them something special and exclusive. And finally, there is a part of me that hopes a new and improved version of The Dreams might convince a few more people to share at least $1 a month with me.

If you’re interested in following the further progress of The Dreams from its current state to the next step on its journey, head over to my Patreon and join the fun. I’ll need all the encouragement I can get so I don’t lose my nerve halfway through making the changes I have planned. If you haven’t read The Dreams yet, you can read the entirety of the current draft here.

Writing Progress October 16 – 22, 2017

DailyWritingProgress

October 16

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 124,159
  • Today’s word count: 351
  • Thoughts: I’m happy my word count is looking a little more lively today, but I’m not happy with the sort of fog that fills up my brain when I try to tackle writing-related tasks. I hope it isn’t burn out. So far I’m willing to place the blame on the rapidly changing weather over the last week. I feel worn out by it and that usually makes it harder for me to think clearly.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Battle the brain fog. Write. Read. Take notes. I have so much NaNo prep left to do and it is starting to make me anxious.

October 17

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 124,787
  • Today’s word count: 628
  • Thoughts: Today was a productive day. I wrote. I worked on NaNo prep. I can’t complain about the amount of stuff I accomplished.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More NaNo prep. Time is running short. I feel the pressure to finish my prep. Also! Revisions. I’m going to keep up the habit of starting my revisions on Wednesday because it seems I really need the extra time these days.

October 18

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 125,020
  • Today’s word count: 235
  • Thoughts: Today was a productive day. I worked on revisions, I reread and took notes on a couple chapters of The Dreams in preparation for NaNoWriMo, and I wrote some new words for Inbetween.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Wrap up revisions, read some more chapters of The Dreams, and write some new words!

October 19

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 125,051
  • Today’s word count: 31
  • Thoughts: I finished revising and it is such a relief to have it out of the way!
  • Tomorrow’s goal: NaNo prep and writing! I’m excited to get back to the stuff I love doing right on schedule this week.

October 20

Today was a strange day writing-wise. I woke up and fully intended to spend the day on NaNo prep and writing. In reality, I worked on NaNo prep and abandoned Inbetween. I don’t regret it too much. Progress is progress. I’m just wondering how I managed to miss out on the writing part of my day.

October 21

No progress made today. I had such a busy day! I was barely home so there was not much of an opportunity to write words or work on my prep for NaNoWriMo.

October 22

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 125,267
  • Today’s word count: 216
  • Thoughts: Well, today was better than nothing. I’m considering Saturday to be a day off, which I haven’t done in a long time, and getting back in my writing groove after a day off does take at least a day or two.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. More NaNo prep. I can do it!

Writing Progress October 9 – 15, 2017

DailyWritingProgress

October 9

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 123,029
  • Today’s word count: 726
  • Thoughts: Writing happened today. It was great. I only wish I would have done more NaNo prep, but I didn’t want to leave Inbetween once I started.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Writing. Prep. I really want to make progress with both in one day, please.

October 10

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 123,189
  • Today’s word count: 160
  • Thoughts: My word count doesn’t look too spectacular today, but I made a good bit of progress with my notes for The Dreams so I still consider today a success.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Revision. Writing. NaNo prep? I think I can do it all, but time will tell.

October 11

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 123,765
  • Today’s word count: 576
  • Thoughts: Writing and revision went really well today! I just wish I’d done more in the way of NaNo prep. This week that has been my greatest challenge. I want to be prepared, but that work keeps getting brushed to the side in favor of work on Inbetween and non-writing life things.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Wrap up this week’s revisions. More writing. Much more NaNo prep. I know I can do it. I just need to remain focused.

October 12

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 123,726
  • Today’s word count: -39
  • Thoughts: Revisions are taking forever. Again. Some weeks the revision process is easy, but more often than not, it’s a struggle. I didn’t get much else done today because I spent all my time fiddling with the words in this week’s chapter.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Finish revisions. Write! NaNo Prep!

October 13

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 123,717
  • Today’s word count: -9
  • Thoughts: Revision, revision, revision. This week has been really rough revision-wise. I’m falling behind on my other writing obligations and that’s significantly more frustrating than just dealing with a difficult chapter.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Get this week’s chapter posted so I can put it behind me and switch my focus back to other writing-related tasks.

October 14

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 123,698
  • Today’s word count: -19
  • Thoughts: I was busy, busy, busy today. I didn’t do as much writing-related work as I would have liked, but I can’t complain because I had a great day. I can make up for missed writing time.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. More NaNo prep. I can do this!

October 15

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 123,808
  • Today’s word count: 110
  • Thoughts: I had a productive day. I worked through rereading more of The Dreams and took notes. Later, I wrote a bit of Inbetween. I wish I could have done more, but I just didn’t have the energy to do more.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More NaNo prep. More writing. I can do it!

Writing Progress October 2 – 8, 2017

DailyWritingProgress

October 2

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 121,359
  • Today’s word count: 120
  • Thoughts: My word count is low, but I think I made a lot of progress today. I spent part of my writing time today reading through The Dreams and taking notes. I still haven’t found a way to quantify that.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. More reading. More notes. More NaNoWriMo prep!

October 3

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 121,767
  • Today’s word count: 408
  • Thoughts: Well, that’s a better word count. I think I’m on my way to building up my writing muscles for NaNoWriMo. I have a long way to go this month, though.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Revising. More writing. More NaNoPrep.

October 4

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 121,798
  • Today’s word count: 31
  • Thoughts: Revisions always, always, always make my word count look terrible. I made it through the first two passes of revisions and partway through the third. I can’t consider that any less than a success.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Finish revising and get back to writing! I’ll hopefully fit in some NaNoPrep time too.

October 5

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 121,894
  • Today’s word count: 96
  • Thoughts: I finished revisions! I’m thrilled! My revisions have been stretching on and on lately and getting it done on Thursday is such a relief.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: NaNoPrep and back to writing.

October 6

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 122,011
  • Today’s word count: 117
  • Thoughts: Today was not the best day for me writing-wise. I had a strange day overall and it really killed my ability to focus. I tried, but it wasn’t terribly successful.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Post this week’s chapter, write more, prep more. I think I can make Saturday a productive day.

October 7

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 122,190
  • Today’s word count: 179
  • Thoughts: Well, it was a super productive day. I got the chapter posted, and I wrote a little bit, but when I went to write I froze. I don’t know what’s going on with me and this story, but my brain shuts off when I try to write lately. I need to figure this out and fast.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Write more than today. I think I can do it.

October 8

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 122,303
  • Today’s word count: 113
  • Thoughts: Today was a busy day and by the time I was able to sit down and write, I was exhausted. I’m pretty proud of what I did accomplish. Not only did I write a little bit of Inbetween, but I also managed to take some more notes for my rewrite of The Dreams.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. More notes. NaNoWriMo isn’t far off and I need to be ready to dive into this new draft of The Dreams on November 1.

12 Reasons for 12 Years of NaNoWriMo

NaNo-2017-Participant-Facebook-Cover

This year will be my twelfth NaNoWriMo! I can’t imagine doing anything else with my November every year.

Some people might wonder why I come back to the same challenge year after year so I made a list!

My 12 Reasons for Coming Back to NaNoWriMo (in no particular order)

  1. community
You can find people doing NaNoWriMo almost anywhere online. It’s great! You can make new friends, and the excitement of discovering old friends who also do NaNoWriMo can’t be beat.
  2.  some years it was the only time I wrote consistently
I feel like I owe NaNoWriMo a debt of gratitude for the years I couldn’t manage a consistent, year-round writing routine for at least getting me to write every day for a month.
  3. excuse to write with joyful, reckless abandon
Nothing gets me to just write like NaNoWriMo. Moments of doubt and hesitation are met by writer friends encouraging me to just write it out and deal with problems with my writing after I actually have something written.
  4. forums
I’m mostly a lurker on the forums, but it’s a great source of inspiration or procrastination… whichever I’m looking for at the moment.
  5. word wars
Word wars are one of the best ways to toss myself headfirst into writing for the day and NaNoWriMo makes it possible to find people to war with at any time.
  6. write-ins
The days I go to write-ins are my most productive days of all. The change of scenery and the motivation I get from writing around other writers really gives me a boost. It’s easy to forget to go out and socialize during a massive writing marathon so having write-ins to blend the writing and the socializing really helps.
  7. trying to beat my personal best
50,000 words in a month is still a challenge for me, but I start every NaNo trying to write more than I’ve ever done before. The years I do manage to accomplish something I’ve never done before are always extra memorable.
  8. statistics
NaNoWriMo has been adding more personal statistics over the last few years and I love them! Having charts to track my progress and lists to tell me how many words per day I need to finish on time make me a very happy writer.
  9. friendly competition
I’m not ashamed to admit it. I check on my writing buddies and when one of them has more words than me, I make it my mission to get my word count higher than theirs.
  10. learning new ways to plan and write
With all the new writer friends I make through NaNoWriMo, it is almost impossible to not pick up some new tips and tricks along the way. Everyone has their own way of doing things that works for them, and if I think it would work for me, I’m going to give it a try.
  11. finding new writers to follow and new books I want to read
NaNoWriMo gets a lot of people to try writing novels that never thought they could. Odds are, I’ll never read most of them (there are too many and most people never share/publish their work from NaNoWriMo) but I do discover a few new authors and books every year.
  12. remembering why I love writing so much
Some years I get down in the dumps and find myself hating writing. Then NaNoWriMo rolls around again and the collective joy for the craft is infectious. It’s impossible for me not to love writing at this time of year.

How many years have you been doing NaNoWriMo? What are you reasons for coming back year after year?
