Writing Progress December 4 – 10, 2017

DailyWritingProgress

December 4

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 132,530
  • Today’s word count: 122
  • Thoughts: I’m still slowly climbing back into productivity. I wish I could just jump back in and write 1,000+ words a day almost every day. That’s just not happening at the moment, but I seem to be increasing my daily word count by a couple dozen words every day so I should be back to where I want to be eventually. I hope.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing! I want to start pulling my daily average up. I know I can do it so I just need to make it happen.

December 5

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 132,657
  • Today’s word count: 127
  • Thoughts: Ugh… today was hard. I don’t know why, but I feel like I slid back further into my post-NaNo funk. I’m supposed to be climbing out of the funk!
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. Maybe some revising, but I think I’m going to focus on writing to see if I can get it straightened out a bit.

December 6

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 132,927
  • Today’s word count: 270
  • Thoughts: I feel good about today. I’m not back to 100% yet, but I feel like I’m getting back to my old writing pace. Seeing an improvement really motivates me to improve more.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Write write write. Revise!

December 7

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 132,996
  • Today’s word count: 69
  • Thoughts: Well, nothing went my way today. The more I learned about Patreon’s new fee system the more of a nightmare it became for me. I pretty much wasted a whole day on being anxious and desperately trying to figure out exactly what was happening and why. I’m still not satisfied, but I hopefully have a plan to at least minimize the damage on Patreon. I’m afraid to jump ship since it was such a struggle to get people to understand how this platform worked in the first place. Doing it again with something new might take months and our budget can’t afford to lose all my Patreon revenue for that long.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Try to get my life back to something resembling normal. Maybe I’ll write. Maybe I won’t.

December 8

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 133,161
  • Today’s word count: 165
  • Thoughts: My income through Patreon still appears to be up in the air and trying to find a solution that works for everyone. It’s depressing, distracting, and extremely stressful. I can’t get into my writing for more than a few minutes without the worry creeping up on me.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Let’s hope I can get back to writing. I hate having my energy sapped by worrying when I’m positive everything will be okay, if not just the same, once the dust settles. The uncertainty in the moment is just draining.

December 9

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 133,165
  • Today’s word count: 4
  • Thoughts: My boyfriend was amazing and treated me to a fun day for my birthday. It got my mind off the trouble happening with Patreon, but it also took my away from my writing. Considering the week I’ve had, I can’t even bring myself to be upset about that.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Get back to writing. I need a couple fantastic writing days to convince myself that this is all going to work out.

December 10

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 133,271
  • Today’s word count: 106
  • Thoughts: Well, today wasn’t as great as I hoped it would be. I was distracted and stressed, but I tried and the effort did have some results.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. I’m still hoping Patreon will take back the changes they’ve announced and my life can go back to normal.

Important changes to my Patreon

So a lot of things have been happening on Patreon. The original post is here, but I thought I would share it here as well.

So, Patreon has gone and made some changes that are going in effect on December 18. You’ve probably seen the email they sent out. These changes will take transaction fees that used to be deducted from your pledge before I receive my money and tack it on top of the amount you pledged at a rate of $0.35 + 2.9%. This means a $1 pledge will now cost you $1.38.

In addition to this change, Patreon is also de-aggregating pledges. With my current pledge-per-weekly chapter model, this would result in you paying 4 separate transaction fees per month. I’m not okay with this.

Each pay-per-thing pledge will result in a separate transaction fee and every patron you pledge to will also result in a separate transaction fee. This is not ideal, and it isn’t what any of us signed up for originally.

That said, I don’t want to abandon Patreon. Other subscription services like PayPal have fees as well, and I’d lose the ability to easily provide patron-only content for you. There are ways to do it, but if I had the spare time and energy to dedicate to such a project, I would have done so already.

What I do want to do is reduce the number of transaction fees I cause for you. I can do away with them altogether, but I can at least take steps to make sure you’re only paying one transaction fee a month to support me.

My solution is to switch to the pledge-per-month model. This will guarantee you only pay one transaction fee per month for your contribution to me. It’s not ideal. I’d much rather have a system where the amount you pledge is the amount you pay, but that’s out of my control.

This solution does bring a bit of anxiety and uncertainty to me. I’m currently collecting your pledged amount between 2 and 4 (and sometimes 5 on 5 Saturday months) times per month. If everyone remains at their current pledge amount when we switch, I’ll only receive about $19 per month. While that’s a whole lot better than nothing, my budget has come to count on the income from Patreon.

So my solution comes with a question/call to action for all of you: will you increase your pledge amount so my pledge per month will match the amount I got from a typical month of pay-per-chapter posts?

We don’t have a lot of time. These changes are coming whether we want them or not on December 18. Please like this post so I know you’ve read it and please let me know your thoughts on this as soon as possible. I want to make these changes as quickly and painlessly as possible and I need to hear from you to do it right.

Writing Progress November 27 – December 3, 2017

DailyWritingProgress

November 27

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 26,355
  • Today’s word count: 1,715
  • Thoughts: Progress! I struggled to wrap up a scene today, but once it was done it was so freeing. Unfortunately, I was exhausted by the time I managed that and not much progress was made beyond that scene.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing! I want to cut down my words per day to finish NaNoWriMo by as much as possible. I should be easy, right?

November 28

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 29,642
  • Today’s word count: 3,287
  • Thoughts: I’m making progress towards my goal for the month, but I still have a long, long way to go.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. A lot more writing.

November 29

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 32,363
  • Today’s word count: 2,721
  • Thoughts: Well, today wasn’t as spectacular of a writing day as I hoped it might be, but I’ve made plenty of progress. I’m not too worried about winning NaNoWriMo because I’ve won and lost in the past and I’m still here and writing every day is pretty much a lifestyle for me at this point. If I don’t write at least a few words my whole day feels off.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Write until my fingers fall off. Let’s see if I can pull off a win.

November 30

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 44,990
  • Today’s word count: 12,627
  • Thoughts: It was the last day of NaNoWriMo, which means it will probably end up being my wordiest day of the year. I’m okay with that, but I think once a year is about all I can handle of 10k+ days. A lot of what I wrote today is going to need a lot of attention and hard work to get it anywhere near good, but I think I wrote at least a few gems. We’ll see how they look after I’ve let them sit.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Back to normal, I hope. Time to go back to splitting my time between writing and revising, I suppose.

November 1

No progress made. I took a day to decompress and relax.

November 2

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 132,338
  • Today’s word count: 4
  • Thoughts: I only managed to revise and post a chapter today. It’s more than nothing, but it wasn’t the triumphant return to writing I’d hoped for. I did manage to do some brainstorming, which was nice.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Return to writing!

November 3

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 132,408
  • Today’s word count: 70
  • Thoughts: Well, it wasn’t a spectacular return to writing, but I did sit down and write a couple sentences. It’s a start.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. I’m sure I’ll gradually climb out of the post-NaNoWriMo funk. The important part is to keep writing so I don’t establish bad habits.
