  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 163,964
  • Today’s word count: 193
  • Thoughts: Today was not a great writing day. I had some focus and then anxiety derailed my productivity. I need to work on making sure that doesn’t happen as often as it does.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. Less anxiety. I can do it!

April 24

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 164,479
  • Today’s word count: 515
  • Thoughts: I wrote! I wrote through the anxiety tonight. Oh yeah… it came back. Not thrilled about that part, but I got past it and still managed to write. I’ll call that progress!
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Even more writing. I think I can do it. I did it today. I should be able to do it again tomorrow.

April 25

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 164,999
  • Today’s word count: 520
  • Thoughts: Today was a pretty productive day! I feel like I’m making some real progress lately.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. Revising! I think I can do it!

April 26

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 45,264
  • Today’s word count: -1

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 165,143
  • Today’s word count: 144

  • Thoughts: Well, my word counts don’t look great, but I did get a new scene from The Dreams posted over on Patreon. I also wrote a bit of Inbetween, but my revising energy was focused on The Dreams. I should have tried to carry that energy over to Inbetween, but at the time I wanted to write. I followed my whim and managed to write a tiny bit. Maybe I would have been more successful if I had focused on revisions?
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. More revising. Let’s have one of the unusually productive Fridays I’ve managed to produce recently!

April 27

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 165,209
  • Today’s word count: 66
  • Thoughts: Typical Friday. I couldn’t settle down and focus on it. It happens. I anticipated it.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Back to writing. More revising. I can do it. I will do it!

April 28

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 165,324
  • Today’s word count: 115
  • Thoughts: Today was a roller coaster ride. There were a lot of ups and downs. I was thrown for a loop a time or two, but none of it resulted in me producing a lot of words. Too bad.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. More revising. I want to get this week’s chapter posted before the weekend is over!

April 29

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 165,602
  • Today’s word count: 278
  • Thoughts: Today was a pretty productive day! I finally finished revising the chapter. I won’t post it until morning. I’m too tired to format a blog post tonight, but I’m proud of getting this done. It’s late, but I’m just happy to get it done before it ended up a whole week late. April was a good month for consistency and I’d hate to end let the month end without the fourth chapter posted.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Blog posts! Writing! I won’t need to think about revising anything for a few days and I’m going to do my best to enjoy it.

CampNaNoWriMo Week 3 Recap

Camp-2018-Writer-Twitter-Header

I did something different this week. I lowered my word count goal!

I’ve always set my goal too high for CampNaNoWriMo and before now I always had too much pride to lower it. This month, I decided to change that. Having the ability to set my own goal should mean I make it something I stand a chance of achieving. My original goal of 30k was obviously out of reach by the end of the first week.

Aside from letting myself change my goal, the most difficult part was deciding what my new goal should be. I spent a long time considering whether 20k or 15k would be more fair. I didn’t want to make things too easy, but I wanted to make sure I stood a chance of winning with my new goal. In the end, I decided to cut my word count in half and settled on a new goal of 15k.

15k is a much smaller goal than the 50k I often manage during NaNoWriMo, but I’ve never won a single CampNaNoWriMo event and I’ve participated in all of them. I want to change that and I think letting go of the idea of huge NaNoWriMo-like word counts will help me win for once. Without the frantic energy and massive group support of NaNoWriMo, I just can’t write anywhere near 50k in a month, but in a good non-NaNo month I can easily write more than 10k.

I had one extraordinary day of writing this week with over 2.4k for that day alone. I had an urge to write by hand that day. The change of writing medium and giving myself permission to write something that might not end up fitting into the main story gave me a creative boost. Now I just need to recreate that boost a few times over. Unfortunately, I don’t think continuing to write by hand would consistently provide the same results. Without the random urge to do something different, writing by hand is still just writing.

How did the 3rd week of CampNaNoWriMo go for you? Are you behind? Ahead? Have you ever lowered your Camp goal to something more within reach halfway through the month?

Writing Progress April 16 – 22, 2018

DailyWritingProgress

April 16

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 162,665
  • Today’s word count: 108
  • Thoughts: Today was a not a good day for writing. I just couldn’t focus. There’s a lot going on in my head right now and I don’t know how to organize it so I can let the words get through.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Focus on writing again. I’m sure everything will work out if I can get the words moving.

April 17

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 162,790
  • Today’s word count: 125

  • Project: The Dreams character study/fluff
  • Word count: 2,301

  • Thoughts: Well, I decided to sit down and just let myself write whatever I wanted about Yuzuki and Souma to help me get back in the right mindset for working on The Dreams. I never expected to write so much. I guess I just had a little story to tell and it insisted on arriving all at once. At this point, I’m not sure I’ll ever share what I wrote. It seems silly and a little embarrassing. We’ll see. I might feel differently later.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: I’m going to a concert with my boyfriend and best friend so I’ll be gone for most of my prime writing time. I’ll try to write before and after, but I’m not counting on much.

April 18

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 162,897
  • Today’s word count: 107
  • Thoughts: Today turned out almost exactly like I expected. I managed to write a little bit, went to the concert, came home, and then I didn’t sleep but I couldn’t focus on writing either.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Back to writing. I need to revise as well. I hope I’ll have the energy to get stuff done!

April 19

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 162,964
  • Today’s word count: 67
  • Thoughts: Today was not a productive day for writing. I only had a bit of energy and I couldn’t stop myself from daydreaming long enough to put that energy to good use.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Put my focus back on writing, tackle some revising, and don’t let another day get away from me.

April 20

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 163,315
  • Today’s word count: 351
  • Thoughts: This was a good writing day for a Friday! This was a good Friday in general!
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. More revising. I want to get a chapter posted. I’m shooting for the stars!

April 21

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 163,507
  • Today’s word count: 192
  • Thoughts: Today did not turn out like I expect at all. I was distracted or busy for much of the day. I wanted to write. I tried to write. I ended up spending more time outside than I expected. I had a great time, but it didn’t allow me to settle down and focus on my work. I can’t even explain spring weather this weekend. It was windy and chilly today.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Write! Revise! Get a chapter posted before it gets any later than it already is! It’ll be Sunday. I know I can make things happen on Sunday.

April 22

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 163,771
  • Today’s word count: 264
  • Thoughts: Today was a pretty productive day, even if my word count doesn’t really reflect that. I got a chapter posted (only a day behind schedule!) and I wrote a bit too. I wish I did more, of course, but I’m proud of what I accomplished today.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Back to writing! I hope I can buckle down and concentrate on making lots of new words even though it is Monday.

Writing Progress April 9 – 15, 2018

DailyWritingProgress

April 9

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 160,900
  • Today’s word count: 639
  • Thoughts: Well, I wasn’t expecting to write this much today. I’ve been battling a migraine which usually means hiding away and feeling miserable. Today I had periods of time when I felt well enough to write and I jumped on the chance. I’m glad I did.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing! Migraine or not, I’m feeling motivated to write and I think I can make it happen!

April 10

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 161,570
  • Today’s word count: 670
  • Thoughts: I struggled some today. I just didn’t have the brief windows of clarity I had yesterday, but, in the end, I did end up writing a decent number of words. I feel like I’m really making progress with the story these days.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. I might revise some too. It depends on my mood and whether I find a good stopping point with my writing to switch gears. I’d really like to do some more work with The Dreams too, but I’ve just started to get back on track with posting Inbetween on time each week so I don’t want to mess that up just now.

April 11

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 162,090
  • Today’s word count: 520
  • Thoughts: Today was reasonably productive. I didn’t finish everything I wanted to accomplish, but I still got plenty done. I think I can live with that.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Writing! Revising! There’s plenty to do and I want to do it all! I hope I can make it work.

April 12

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 162,116
  • Today’s word count: 26

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 45,160
  • Today’s word count: 171

  • Thoughts: I revised today, posted a preview of this week’s chapter on Patreon, and started working on The Dreams again after spending more time than I’d like rereading the third draft to make sure I don’t drastically alter the tone after taking a break from it.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Work on The Dreams! Work on Inbetween! Can I do both? I hope so!

April 13

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 45,265
  • Today’s word count: 105
  • Thoughts: This is such a typical Friday for me that I don’t know what to say. Not much was written. It was a busy day.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Post a chapter! Write more! I hope I can do it all!

April 14

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 162,249
  • Today’s word count: 133
  • Thoughts: Today might not look particularly productive, but I thought it was a great day. I posted a chapter. I wrote a bit (not nearly enough, I admit). And I took a huge, nearly 5 mile walk around town and enjoyed the warm weather.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Cooler weather and rain are in the forecast so I’m hoping to stay inside, drink plenty of tea and coffee and write. I think I can make that happen.

April 15

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 162,557
  • Today’s word count: 308
  • Thoughts: Not great, but better. The weekend had a powerful hold on me this week. I tried to fight it but only saw minimal success. My mood is in a downward spiral again because our beautiful spring weather disappeared. I’m trying to resist the cold weather and the mood it puts me in. I don’t know if I can pretend it is warm and beautiful outside for much longer.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. The weather is supposed to be cold and rainy. I’ll be hiding at my keyboard wrapped up in blankets. Hopefully I’ll be writing.

CampNaNoWriMo Week 2 Recap

Camp-2018-Writer-Twitter-Header

CampNaNoWriMo is halfway over!

We finally got some spring-like weather around here! I’m definitely in higher spirits now, but it hasn’t done much good for my word count just yet.

Winter weather in April really suppresses me spirits, but did you know sudden, beautiful spring weather is also distracting? The weather over the last few days lured me outside. I didn’t write much, but I like to think I was filling my well. Now that I’ve enjoyed some spring weather I’ll have more energy to dedicate to my writing.

Even though I’m feeling more optimistic, I’m thinking about lowering my word count goal for the month. Two weeks ago 1,000 words a day felt more than possible. Now because I’ve been struggling I’ll need to write around 1,500 words per day to finish on time. That’s getting a little too close to the words per day needed for traditional NaNoWriMo which I knew I wouldn’t be able to handle this month.

Now that I’ve decided to change my goal, I need to decide how much I want to lower it. I could cut my goal in half and lower my daily goal below 1,000 words, or could lower it just enough to get my goal back to 1,000 words per day. Both options have some appeal. What do you think I should do?

I just want to work on The Dreams! That story has been neglected far too much lately. I get anxious about my pitiful buffer for Inbetween and feel like I can’t step back from it to tackle an equally important project. I’d say I wish there were more hours in the days but I know I’d end up wasting the extra time somehow.

I’m looking forward to writing in week 3. I have high hopes!

How’s CampNaNoWriMo going for you? Are you considering changing your goal? Let me know!
