Writing Progress July 23 – 29, 2018

daily writing progress

July 23

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 182,787
  • Today’s word count: 254
  • Thoughts: Today was a mixed bag. I had migraine issues for much of the day and didn’t bother to touch my writing during that time. Then I did start to feel better before I went to bed and I managed to write a couple hundred words. For the sort of day I had, I think I did pretty well with my writing.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. So much more writing. As long as I’m not having migraine pain I should be able to make great progress.

July 24

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 183,017
  • Today’s word count: 230
  • Thoughts: Today was okay-ish for what it was. My migraine wasn’t completely gone so it caused me to lower my expectations quite a lot. I’m still proud of what I accomplished. I found the time and energy to sit down during a day of chaos. I can be proud of that.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing! This migraine better be completely gone by tomorrow. Then I can really focus on writing.

July 25

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 183,116
  • Today’s word count: 99
  • Thoughts: I really struggled to concentrate today. There was a lot of flooding in my area and new weather alerts were rolling out at least once an hour. I went into the day intending to write, but I ended up putting way more attention and energy into following the reports of flooding in my area.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Back to writing. I can feel the story building up inside me. It’s going to break out soon and I know that day will be exceptionally productive.

July 26

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 183,217
  • Today’s word count: 101
  • Thoughts: I struggled to focus today. There wasn’t any excuse for it. I just couldn’t get myself to concentrate long enough to make significant progress.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. I might revise too if I have the motivation.

July 27

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 183,282
  • Today’s word count: 65
  • Thoughts: I can’t say I’m surprised. Today was Friday. I rarely have a good, productive day of writing on Friday.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Writing. Writing. Writing. I need to get my writing mojo back. I’ve been distracted and allowing drama in the writing community to drain away so much of my energy. I need to fill up my well again, but in the mean time I feel like I still need to create something. It’s not the best place to be. I hope I can turn it around soon.

July 28

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 183,446
  • Today’s word count: 164
  • Thoughts: Well, another slightly productive day under my belt. I can’t seem to properly get into the groove these days. I’m trying, but there’s always a bit of a mental block there. I’m trying to take it easy and allow it to work itself out, but I’m impatient.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. Hopefully more patience.

July 29

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 183,570
  • Today’s word count: 124
  • Thoughts: Ugh. Today was another struggle. I really do think I’m a little bit burned out. I just don’t know how to address it without letting my writing schedule completely fall apart. It’s something I need to think about going forward.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: I want to write, but I need to figure out why I’m struggling so much and make some adjustments. We’ll see what happens.

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 181,812
  • Today’s word count: 626
  • Thoughts: Today was the best day of writing I’ve had in a while. It felt great! It was a like a dam broke in my mind and the story finally started rushing out again. I’ve been waiting for this!
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Keep up the momentum! I don’t want to stop writing.

July 17

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 182,268
  • Today’s word count: 474
  • Thoughts: Today was another productive day. I wrote. I revised. I posted a chapter. Overall it was a really good day for writing.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. I’m feeling motivated these days. At this rate I’ll be able to stop being behind all the time within a few days.

July 18

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 182,325
  • Today’s word count: 39
  • Thoughts: Ugh. Today was tough. I’m not sure what went wrong today, but something went terribly wrong with my writing mojo.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Get the writing mojo back. Write. Revise. Repeat.

July 19

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 182,466
  • Today’s word count: 141
  • Thoughts: Today was another struggle. I’m not entirely sure what’s going on with me these days. I was so excited when for the few good days I had earlier this week. Then I lost that mojo again. I want it back!
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. More revising. It’s Friday, though. I know I’ll need to focus on getting anything done at all.

July 20

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 182,489
  • Today’s word count: 23
  • Thoughts: Typical Friday, in my opinion. I can’t get much done with my writing. My mind is on too many other things.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Hopefully more writing. I have other things to do, but I’m hoping I’ll have a nice stretch of time after all that’s done to concentrate on my writing.

July 21

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 182,504
  • Today’s word count: 15
  • Thoughts: I had a busy day after a bad night’s sleep. Writing did not factor well into the equation.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Back to writing. I should have a nice, quiet day at home so this should be possible!

July 22

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 182,533
  • Today’s word count: 29
  • Thoughts: Today was not a good day. I actually stopped in the middle of a sentence. A migraine hit me. I tried to write but once I made the attempt, I knew it was a mistake. I had to sleep instead.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Beat the migraine. Get back to writing. It needs to happen.

July CampNaNoWriMo – We’re Halfway There!

Camp-2018-Writer-Twitter-Header

It’s hard to believe the month is halfway over.

My progress this month is about on track with what I expect from a CampNaNoWriMo month. I’m writing, but I’m not writing enough to reach my target. Even with a significantly lower goal this month, I’m struggling to keep up.

The problems I’m having this month are similar to the problems I’ve been having with my writing all year. I’m caught in a cycle of problems with physical and mental health. I fall behind because I’m sick for a day or two and then I end up feeling overwhelmed and anxious once I’ve recovered because I’ve fallen further behind.

I’d really like to break the cycle by writing so much that I no longer feel like I’m behind even after taking a few unexpected days off. Realistically, I know I should work on getting rid of the feeling that I need to get caught up to some self-imposed goal. I can adjust my goals and I should when I start to feel discouraged.

That’s one of my favorite things about CampNaNoWriMo. Setting my own goal helps me feel a lot less stressed out and I need to feel less guilty about lowering my goal during the month if I’m feeling overwhelmed. The custom goal is one of the best aspects of Camp and it’s okay to take advantage of a built-in feature of the event. Right now I’m only a couple thousand words behind being on target so I think I’ll see if I can make it without lowering my goal any further.

I’ve posted a bit of my progress on the new draft of The Dreams over on my Patreon. I’m collecting all of the cleaned up scenes under the “draft 3” tag. Patrons at all levels have access to all of The Dreams as I finish the scenes. So far posting the story this way has given me more confidence to experiment with this draft. One of my biggest regrets with the last draft was playing it safe with certain scenes.

How is CampNaNoWriMo going for you this month? Are you on target or thinking about lowering your goal?

Writing Progress July 9 – 15, 2018

daily writing progress

July 9

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 180,091
  • Today’s word count: 82
  • Thoughts: I revised a lot today. My only disappointment was that I didn’t finish revising before I needed to sleep.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Wrap up revising, post chapter, and get back to writing!

July 10

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 180,161
  • Today’s word count: 70
  • Thoughts: Well, I revised and got a chapter posted, but I didn’t do much else with my writing. I just didn’t have the creative energy to switch gears and get back into writing.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Back to writing. I’m sure I can do it. I have to do it.

July 11

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 180,428
  • Today’s word count: 267
  • Thoughts: Today wasn’t too bad. I thought it would be better because I had a really strong start to the day, but then things just fell apart for a while. I got it back together towards the end, but it was too late to really make a big difference. Writing happened though so I’m not complaining too much.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. Hopefully some revising. Just more productivity in general, please.

July 12

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 180,678
  • Today’s word count: 250
  • Thoughts: I wrote. I didn’t write as much as I hoped. I just didn’t have a great day outside of writing and it spilled over into my writing time and drained my productivity. I made up for it a bit with a writing push right before bed.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. A ton of revising, if I’m lucky.

July 13

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 180,813
  • Today’s word count: 135
  • Thoughts: I’m not even surprised. This was such a typical Friday with typical Friday distractions. I’m just glad I wrote something.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. Hopefully more revising. If we’re really lucky I’ll get a chapter posted.

July 14

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 181,003
  • Today’s word count: 190
  • Thoughts: Ugh. Today was rough. I wanted to write, but I kept getting distracted. It seems to be a major, recurring theme with my days lately. I need to get out of the rut and get back to more productive habits.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. More revising. I have to keep trying or I’ll never succeed.

July 15

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 181,186
  • Today’s word count: 183
  • Thoughts: Today was a struggle for reasons I still don’t understand. I had a two short bursts of writing and managed to produce a paragraph I think is a keeper.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. A lot more writing, I hope. I have a lot of work to do to make up for all the bad writing days I’ve been having.

Writing Progress July 2 – 8, 2018

daily writing progress

July 2

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 178,979
  • Today’s word count: 117
  • Thoughts: Today was another so-so day of writing. I feel like I’m not making nearly enough progress. When I have the motivation to write, I don’t have the time or ability to do it and when I have the time, I feel like the words have vacated my brain. I know this won’t last forever, but I’m impatient to get back in sync so I can make real progress again. Good writing days are so freeing.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. I have to keep trying or I’ll never get anywhere.

July 3

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 179,310
  • Today’s word count: 331
  • Thoughts: I feel like I’m getting more productive! I like it. It’s nice. Let’s hope I can keep it going.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing! I’m confident I can do it!

July 4

Today was interesting. In addition to being the 4th of July, I came home from a mini vacation today. Instead of writing, I settled back into my apartment, gave my cats lots of attention, and tried not to melt as the heatwave continued.

July 5

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 46,128
  • Today’s word count: -1

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 179,686
  • Today’s word count: 376

  • Thoughts: Today was pretty productive. I revised The Dreams a bit and wrote some more of Inbetween. No complaints from me. I like productive days.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. More revising. I know I can do it.

July 6

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 179,826
  • Today’s word count: 140
  • Thoughts: Typical Friday. I got some work done, but overall I was pretty distracted. I wrote a bit, but I didn’t revise at all.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. Revising. Hopefully I can get a chapter posted.

July 7

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 179,861
  • Today’s word count: 35
  • Thoughts: Today was a hard day for writing. I just couldn’t find my creative side. I just stared at the blinking cursor and tried to will the rest of the scene to form into words. No luck. I probably should have switched gears and tried to revise, but I wanted to write and being unable to get the words flowing drained me of motivation.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. Actual writing. And hopefully I can revise a chapter too!

July 8

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 180,009
  • Today’s word count: 148
  • Thoughts: I wrote, but I’m still a little disappointed. This was a day when I had the inspiration to write and just kept letting myself get distracted. Some of it couldn’t be helped and some of it was definitely my fault for not planning my time better.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More of the same, but with a lot more focus.

Writing Progress June 25 – July 1, 2018

daily writing progress

June 25

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 177,969
  • Today’s word count: 14
  • Thoughts: Holy crap! Today was a strange day! I was busy! I went outside! I fought trolls on Twitter! I messed around with the word in my story but when the time came to try to write I was ready to pass out.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Write! Stay awake long enough to write like normal!

June 26

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 178,080
  • Today’s word count: 111
  • Thoughts: Today was not as productive as I hoped, but I made progress. This scene is evolving the way I envisioned it, but it is taking me a long time to bring it to life. Maybe I’m just impatient!
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. I’m sure I can do it. The story is in my head. I need to get it out.

June 27

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 178,566
  • Today’s word count: 486
  • Thoughts: Today was pretty productive and most of my writing happened at a different time of day than usual. I could get used to this!
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. Maybe some revising. We’ll see!

June 28

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 178,699
  • Today’s word count: 133
  • Thoughts: Today was not quite as productive as I wanted it to be. I just couldn’t focus. The real world got to me, distracted me, and really got me down. I hope I can wipe the slate clean by sleeping.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing. More revising. I’m hoping I can escape into my writing and have a good day.

June 29

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 178,779
  • Today’s word count: 80
  • Thoughts: I worked on revisions today! I didn’t do much else with my writing, but I made progress and that’s always a victory on Friday.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Wrap up revisions. Post chapter. Write more words. Don’t melt!!!

June 30

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 178,823
  • Today’s word count: 44
  • Thoughts: The heatwave is in full swing today. I managed to finish revising and get the chapter posted. Then my brain melted. No more writing while the brain is melted. I don’t think a week’s worth of revising could salvage melted-brain writing.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Start CampNaNoWriMo! Try not to melt. This heatwave isn’t going to let up anytime soon.

July 1

  • Project: Inbetween
  • Total word count: 178,862
  • Today’s word count: 39
  • Thoughts: I thought I’d work on The Dreams today. I thought I’d write more in general, but the day got away from me. On the bright side, I made some new cat friends!
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Back to writing. I need to buckle down and focus. This month is CampNaNoWriMo, after all.

What I Read in June

I’m still in a bit of a reading slump. I miss the days when I read a book a week. I’m not sure what I need to do to get those days back.

With CampNaNoWriMo next month, I can’t imagine making a comeback in July.

Books I finished reading in June:

Books I’m currently reading:

What books did you read in June? Have you ever had to overcome a reading slump? How did you do it?
