Writing Progress January 3–9, 2022

January 3

  • Project: Inbetween (novel version)
  • Total word count: 50,562
  • Today’s word count: 45
  • Thoughts: I finally wrote again! I’d been outlining a bit most days lately but not really getting deep into it or finding the motivation to actually focus on making the (semi) permanent words appear on the screen. I’ve been reminded on Twitter that outlining is still part of writing, but I find it is such a different experience and required toolset that I feel the need to separate writing a draft from outlining that draft.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Hopefully I’ll be able to continue writing. If that’s not going to happen, I’ll just go back to outlining. Either way, I’m going to keep moving forward!

January 4

  • Project: Inbetween (novel version)
  • Total word count: 50,562
  • Today’s word count: 2
  • Thoughts: I showed up to write and the words just wouldn’t come out. It wasn’t because I lacked words. I probably had too many words. Nothing would come out. It was frustrating so I decided to stop trying and see if the tangled up mess in my head would unravel itself with some sleep.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Hopefully I’ll be in a better position to write words. They’re there. I just need to get them out.

January 5

  • Project: Inbetween (novel version)
  • Total word count: 50,611
  • Today’s word count: 47
  • Thoughts: I’m starting to get my writing muscles back. It hasn’t happened as quickly as I’d hoped, but it is happening. I’m going to keep working toward writing a decent amount again every day.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: I want to write more, of course. I’m also starting to feel like I need to start working on the next draft of The Dreams sometime soon. The only thing holding me back there is feeling absolutely overwhelmed by everything I’ve hoped to accomplish in the 4th draft.

January 6–9

I switched gears to prepare for another draft of The Dreams.

I’m not sure how I should format progress updates for this. At this point I’m very used to just doing word count updates with some quick thoughts about my day and where I want to go next. If anyone has some suggestions on how to do daily progress updates for this stage of writing I’d love to hear them.

Draft 3 is in a huge binder. It’s useful for looking at something I’ve written and rewritten with fresh eyes. It also gives me a good excuse to get away from my screens for a while.

On the 9th I was reading a couple scenes in the huge binder and my cat started throwing a fit because she couldn’t fit on my lap too. Usually if I’m reading something, even if it is heavy and I need to sit it on my lap, she squeezes underneath and I rest the book on her. The binder is bigger and much heavier than her so it wasn’t possible and she was not happy.
