Writing Progress May 15–21, 2023

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 33,325
  • Today’s word count: 90
  • Thoughts: Writing didn’t go so bad today. I thought I’d have a lot more energy than I did, but it wasn’t so bad. I did have other things in my day that pulled away my energy so I guess I just underestimated how much those thing would take out of me.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: More writing, I hope. I am feeling better about writing these days so I need to keep pushing forward.

No writing progress

The day started off so well! I had some non-writing work to do in the morning and that went great. I treated myself to some down time in the early afternoon and that’s where things went downhill. My allergies got really, really bad. My eyes were red and watery and a sinus headache started up pretty soon after. Allergy medicine pretty much forced me into an extremely early bedtime. Lessons learned: allergies are unpredictable, write early.

  • Total word count: 33,325
  • Today’s word count: 72
  • Thoughts: I’m glad I felt better because I had a really busy day. I managed to write a bit anyway. I was able to call it a night feeling pretty accomplished.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: It should be a less busy day. Hopefully that will turn into more writing. Things always have a way of getting hectic when I’m expecting a peaceful day, but I’m reasonably optimistic.

  • Today’s word count: 62
  • Thoughts: Things were a bit more chaotic than I expected the day to be. It happens. It’s not fun, but I’m glad I was at least able to write something after the day quieted down.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: After errands and chores, I should have a solid chunk of free time. I want to use that to write. We’ll see if I get much writing done with that time.

No writing progress.

My allergies are back and causing trouble. The weather has been unseasonably warm for most of the spring so far and that has caused a ton of things to mature early and stay blooming longer than usual. Getting slammed with strange pollen cocktails has messed with my sinuses which is always miserable but the part that has destroyed my ability to read and write has been the puffy, itchy eyes. I can’t do anything that requires my eyes for a while when it gets bad and after I recover these days my eyes tend to get bad again a little while later!

May 20

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 33,461
  • Today’s word count: 2
  • Thoughts: I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to write today. I tried. I spent a lot of time just trying to get started. Obviously, I didn’t make it much past that point.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: It’s going to be a busy day. Sometimes those days end up being really good for writing too.

May 21

  • Project: The Dreams
  • Total word count: 33,641
  • Today’s word count: 180
  • Thoughts: It did end up being a very busy day and then I wrote too. Everything turned out exactly the way I hoped it would. That’s always a nice feeling.
  • Tomorrow’s goal: Tomorrow shouldn’t be nearly as busy. I just hope I’ll still be able to write a decent amount.

  1. Man, having allergies sucks big time! I had some last week that turned into a full-blown cold and cough that I still haven’t recovered from. (Though I’m at least well enough to keep my gym appointment today.)

I’m glad to see that even though the writing may seem small, you still tried to get a little bit done. That’s an inspiration for me. I’ve been in a creative funk/slump for the past 14 months or so, and I haven’t wanted to write much or not at all. But I think I’m finally coming out of it and ready to get back to finishing the first draft of my sci-fi retelling of the story of Joseph.

Even small steps get you where you want to go.

    • I’ve been trying to dig myself out of a creative slump that started sometime after NaNoWriMo 2021. I came down with covid alongside my boyfriend and a couple people at his job a couple weeks after that. Then we started seriously house hunting at the start of 2022 and just hit the 1 year anniversary of living in our house.

I’m just now starting to feel like I have the strength to claw my way back to my former writing rhythm. It’s going to be an uphill battle and I know my writing routine won’t look the same as it did in 2021. I just hope I can find a way to make it even better than it used to be.
